Week 3: Learning about Foundations!

Hello, everyone! We are currently eight days away from our application deadline, so be sure to complete and submit your applications for the ImpactNC grant.

Last week, we had the chance to meet with some very insightful guest speakers and learn more about different worlds of philanthropy from them.

On Tuesday, we met with Bobbi Hapgood, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Educational Foundation of America. She talked to us about what is was like to be apart of running a family foundation and how dynamics within a family foundation can differ significantly from those within a standard nonprofit organization or foundation. She prompted us to think about the group dynamics within our foundation and how we can keep those in mind throughout the grant making process in order to work most efficiently.

On Thursday, Jimmy Rosen came to speak with us about his time working for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He talked about their challenges at the foundation with handling such large amounts of funding and making sure the funding was used efficiently and put towards solving issues within their focus areas. This made us think forward to when we will decide how to use our funding towards the end of the semester – while we are going to receive applications from nonprofits who are doing incredible work in their communities, we have to be able to stick to our mission statement and focus areas and filter out propositions that may not align with those.

However, we look forward to receiving applications from organizations whose missions do align with our goals. Remember to submit your applications by March 20th, and thank you for keeping up with ImpactNC’s journey through this semester!
